Flat Stanley's Journal (Part 3)

Adventures with Jane and Bob Miller
November through December, 2004
By Sarah and Wolfgang Blauen

November 24, 2004
This morning we finished packing, loaded the car and drove to Canyon. Dragon went with us, too. He waved at all the cars we passed. A few drivers laughed and waved back. The trip to Canyon is long - almost six hours. The fields were green until we got to Wichita Falls. After that the landscape was mostly brown with short, scrubby Mesquite bushes. Around Vernon we started seeing lots of fields of cotton so the colors changed to brown with dots of white. Once we crossed the Caprock the land was fairly empty and we could see for a long distance. We got to Canyon about 4:30. Mr. and Mrs. Glaser were very happy to see us.
Miss Jane and Mrs. Glaser made a Pecan Pie and Mr. Bob helped make Cranberry-Orange Relish for tomorrow. Dragon and I were worn out from traveling and went to bed early.

Happy Thanksgiving! What a busy day. Miss Jane and Mrs. Glaser started cooking again. First a Pumpkin Pie and then they made Dressing and stuffed it into a turkey. The turkey smelled so good while it cooked.
Miss Jane’s brother, Tom, came over and then his daughter, Rachel with her 9-month old daughter, Anne appeared. Anne was afraid of Dragon at first also. Since it is Thanksgiving, I had my picture taken with a Pilgrim, an Indian and some turkeys – Tom and Anne got in the picture, too. We all played on the Glaser’s new carpet while the fire roared in the fireplace. I kept my distance from that, you can be sure!
Dinner was quite fancy. The table was set with fine china, sterling silver flatware and crystal glasses all on a crisp white tablecloth. And what a feast!! Turkey with dressing, Green Beans with Almonds, Cranberry-Orange Relish, Waldorf Salad, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Rolls and Sweet Potatoes. After the food was eaten and the dishes washed, we had pie and coffee while watching “Charlie Brown ‘s Thanksgiving “ and “The Grinch” .

Mr. Bob, Mr. Glaser and Tom went to work for part of the day. Mr. Glaser owns a Print Shop, Tom is the Manager and Mr. Bob is their Computer Consultant. Once the boys were gone, the rest of us pretended we were Christmas Elves and wrapped Christmas presents. Since Miss Jane and Mr. Bob will be in Germany for Christmas (me too!), we are having early “Christmas with the Glasers”. While the Elves were rustling paper, we heard a different type of rustling from outside. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The man from next door and his two sons were raking the leaves in the Glaser’s front yard! What wonderful neighbors!
Opening presents was lots of fun. Everyone was laughing, giving hugs and thanking each other. Even Anne figured out how to open her gift.
